Pass the PCN Bill Now, Registrar Urges National Assembly

The Registrar, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, PCN, Dr Elijah Mohammed has called on the National Assembly to expedite action in the passage of the PCN bill before it.

In an interview in Abuja, the PCN Registrar said the passage of the bill was key to its performance as the body mandated to regulate pharmacy practice and checkmate illicit drug dealers in the country.

“We are asking that they should expedite action so that we can have more power to bite. These individuals, when we take them to court and the court finds them guilty, the fine and whatever punishment that would go with it, is commensurate to dissuade them from taking part in these illicit activities. Because, if they are arrested and taken to court, you will be shocked how much fine they would be made to pay”, he said.

Dr Mohammed said, it would also be shocking to know that these illicit drug dealers are usually given very mild fines compared to the risk they expose Nigerians to.

On COVID-19, he urged pharmacists to follow the rules and educate Nigerians on safety guidelines. He warned practitioners to desist from unethical practices such as treating people with COVID-19.
The Registrar also called on Nigerians to report any pharmacist found wanting to the Council for necessary action.

“We should educate Nigerians on what COVID is all about and how to maintain good sanitation. And we also have warned them that pharmacists are not allowed to treat COVID-19.

If there is any unethical practice going on in any facility, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria is open is to everyone. If you have any complaints, we will deal with the matter squarely”, he added.

Dr Mohammed also advised Nigerians to respect and abide by the protocols of the federal government to prevent further spread of COVID-19 among the populace.
